Gluten-Free Pain au Chocolat (Chocolatines)

Welcome back to our blog! Today, we’re exploring one of France’s most famous pastries: Pain au Chocolat. This delightful treat, known for its flaky layers and rich chocolate filling, is a staple in French bakeries and a must-try for anyone with a passion for pastry.

One of the most charming ways to enjoy pain au chocolat is by visiting a traditional French bakery, or boulangerie. Picture yourself strolling through the streets of Paris, the aroma of freshly baked pastries wafting through the air. With the following recipe your kitchen will soon smell just like the streets of Paris we all adore.

Pain au Chocolat

Ingredients:

  • Gluten-free puff pastry of your choice
  • Dark chocolate (We recommend 75%+)
  • 2 tablespoons icing sugar
  • 1 heaped tablespoon unsalted vegan or dairy butter
  • Egg wash (1 egg + a dash of vegan or dairy milk)
  • Optional: Additional icing sugar and chocolate sauce (melted butter + melted chocolate) for drizzling on top

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Take the ready-rolled puff pastry out of the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for 5 minutes before unrolling it (if too cold, it may crack).
  3. Prepare the filling: Melt the butter in the microwave (in 20-second increments) and cut the chocolate bar into little sticks.
  4. Slice the puff pastry into rectangles (about 8 rectangles).
  5. Place chocolate sticks on either side of each pastry rectangle.
  6. Fold the pastry into the center, enclosing the chocolate.
  7. Brush the top with egg wash.
  8. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until puffed up and golden.
  9. Optional: Drizzle with melted chocolate sauce and dust with icing sugar.
